The last vehicle leaves at four. From then until nine the next morning the plateau belongs to whoever is staying, and that changes the place more than any itinerary can describe.
16:00, the site empties
Day visitors go. The dust settles, literally, and within twenty minutes you can hear the wind moving through the gullies below.
17:40, the good light
The sun drops behind the western ridge and the canyon fills with shadow from the bottom up. This is the twenty minutes people book the camp for.
19:30, the fire
Skewers, rice, achards, and whatever fruit came up from Irodo that morning. The cooks eat with you; there is one table.
The plateau is dark enough that the Milky Way casts a shadow. Most people have never seen this.
21:00, the sky
Southern Cross, Alpha Centauri, the two Magellanic Clouds. From May to September the galactic core sits directly over the canyon.
05:15, the east point
Ten minutes' walk, coffee in hand. The light arrives on the far wall first and works its way down. Nobody talks much.
